Présentation

Right in the heart of the antique city of Périgueux, Périgueux Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum both protects and brings to life the remains of a great Gallo-Roman dwelling, the Vesunna domus. Constructed in the middle of the 1st century AD and based upon a typically Roman plan, this house was occupied until the end of the 3rd century. Open to the public since July 2003 Vesunna has become a reference not to be missed when adding to the knowledge of ancient Aquitaine. Dediacated to the Gallo-Roman town and its inhabitants, this museum explains the archaeological site as well as the background details of the life of its occupants. The collections are noted for their exceptional groups of sculpted stones (architecture, inscriptions, funeral monuments) for their mural discovered during the excavation of the domus and for numerous objects from daily life.

This contemporary masterpiece by Jean Nouvel, the French architect of international renown carries on a dialogue with the historic heritage. It presents a spectacular perspective on the remains, protected by a vast canopy with glass screens. The entire museum forms part of the landscaped gardens of the Vesunna Tower.
