Présentation
Lascaux is without doubt the most famous cave in the world. Originally, it was
a superb grotto with dazzling white walls of calcite. Prehistoric man chose it as a sanctuary 17,000 years ago, decorating it with a breathtaking display of wild oxen, horses, bison, stags, wild goats and a multitude of enigmatic geometric symbols.
By incredibly good fortune, thanks to the geological nature of the soil, numerous paintings and engravings survived almost intact. For more than twenty years after the cave was discovered in 1940, it was visited by thousands of tourists. The risk of damage became so great that the cave was finally closed to the public in 1963. Lascaux II is an exact replica of the two most spectacular galleries – the Bull's Chamber and the Axial Gallery.
The photographer, Ray Delvert, had taken a large number of photographs in the original cave.
